2020 NZIA Wellington Architecture Award winner!

The McKenzie Higham Architects' redevelopment of Thorndon School – Te Kura o Pipitea has won the 2020 NZIA Wellington Architecture Award in the education category.

This was a complex and demanding project with a long gestation period - but the wait has been worth it. The end result is a compact school community where every square metre counts, the quality of space both inside and out is high. The school presents a coherent, rational exterior with vibrant and playful interior spaces. At the heart of the site is a landscaped courtyard which retains existing established vegetation.

Thanks to the school community for their engagement and tolerance during the construction process, and to the Ministry of Education for their vision and aspiration.

The MHA Team : Matt Jeffery, Ashton Dooley, Callum McKenzie, Chris Evans, Trevor Beamsley, Mark McMillan, Christina Pop.

The Consultant Team : Silvester Clark - Structural Engineers, Coffey - Geotechnical, CORA - Building Services, WSP - Fire Engineers, Maltbys - QS, Coffey - Project Management.
