Onslow College Student Visit

We recently had a lot of fun hosting 50 Year 9 Maths Students from Onslow College in our office as part of SmartNZ’s Secondary School Employer Partnership program. The program brings together schools and employers to help students contextualise their learning and expose them to different career options.

The visit showed students how their mathematics curriculum can be applied in the real-world, with a focus on measurement. Activities included undertaking site measures & drawing to scale, free-hand sketching, an introduction to digital tools and some fun with the VR headset!

Associate Jacob Rhodes-Robinson has also had an opportunity to facilitate two classroom sessions with students. One covering what the daily life of an Architect looks like and how we use maths, and another to provide some close-to-home real-world context - using scale, area and perimeter and applying these areas of mathematics to the College’s Whare which was designed by McKenzie Higham Architects and is currently under construction.
